Privacy Policy (Personal Information Protection Policy)
1. Stroll through the Yōkaichi-Gokoku Historic District
2. Traditional Japanese papermaking experience (Ōzu Washi)
3. Handmade kite crafting experience
Uchiko is a town that flourished from the late Edo period to the Taishō era (around the 1800s to mid-1900s) through the production of mokurō (wood wax). You’ll stroll through the Yōkaichi-Gokoku district, where the atmosphere of that era still lingers in the well-preserved streetscape. In the Ikazaki area of Uchiko, traditional Japanese papermaking (washi) has been practiced for centuries, and even today, skilled artisans continue to create handmade paper using time-honored techniques. Here, you can enjoy a hands-on papermaking experience.
Ikazaki is also known for its vibrant kite-making culture using washi, and every year on May 5th, it hosts the “Ikazaki Giant Kite Battle,” a festival with a history of over 400 years. In the tradition-rich town of Ikazaki, why not try making your own kite and sending it soaring into the sky on the wind? It’s sure to become a memorable part of your journey.
